ÿRSFTSTYLIQd>Harvard HWU Cite Them RightûûNPalgraves Cite Them Right - HarvardûûScienceûûP4 FÄNOTES... Initial note about the notes: quote marks are used here to show what should be typed, do NOT include the quote marks themselves. General Notes: Dates: Input website access dates and other dates, in the format: e.g. "24 January 2011" for access dates (which should include the year) or just "24 January" for other dates (which generally should not include the year). Individual cited pages: Don't include anything in your EndNote references themselves. In Word, select a an in-text citation, click 'Edit & Manage Citation(s)' from the EndNote toolbar in Word, and add the page numbers in the 'Cited Pages' box. Spacing and layout bibliographies: This is primarily determined by the EndNote settings in your Word document. Click the little 'expand' arrow in the bottom right of the 'Bibliography' section of the EndNote toolbar in Word, then select the 'Layout' tab. Specific Reference Type Notes:- Reprint books: Add "Reprint, " prior to the place published, and also add a comma then a space then the reprint year after the publisher. E.g. "Reprint, London" for 'Place Published', and "Cambridge University Press, 1966" for the 'Publisher'. Multi-volume books: If you're citing the the full work (all volumes) then include (in normal arabic numerals) the number of volumes in the 'Number of Volumes' field; whereas if you're citing a particular volume, just include that as part of the title. Web Pages: If you wish, you can use the 'Description' field to include the title of a specific webpage (if you want the main title to be the website name). The 'Type of Medium' field can be used if required (e.g. if you're referencing a logo, you could add "Logo" or "Podcast" for a podcast etc, or if you're citing something that's not obviously web-based then you could just put "Online" in this field). The 'Edition' field can be used for version details etc if required (e.g. "Version 5.2"). Artwork: Include medium information in 'Type of Work' field (not 'Description'). For artwork material in galleries, in the 'Publisher' field include the insitution then a comma then a space then the city. Bills: Put the House (of Commons or Lords) in 'Legislative Body' field and use EITHER just 'Code' or both 'Session' and 'Bill Number'. In-text citations should be edited to removed author and instead include 'Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons,' (or Lords) as a prefix. Statutes: Only use the 'Statute' reference type for UK post-1963 Acts of Parliament. Include 'Year' and 'Title' (which should also include the year, e.g. "Access to Justice Act 1999"), plus add the chapter number to the 'Statute Number' field (just the number in normal arabic numerals). For UK pre-1963 statutes, use 'Legal Rule or Regulation' reference type and just include the 'Title' (including the year as part of name) and in the 'Rule Number' include: the Regnal year, the monarch and the chapter number. E.g. "26 Hen. 8, c. 1" (without quotes). For other statutory instrument material, use 'Legal Rule or Regulation' reference type and just include the 'Title' (including the year as part of the name) and in the 'Rule Number' field include the full SI year and number, e.g. "SI 2001/3665". Cases: Include 'Reporter Volume', 'Reporter Abbreviation' and 'First Page' where appropriate. For in-text citations, click 'Edit & Manage Citation(s)' from the EN toolbar in Word, and choose 'Formatting: Author (Year)'. Variations to include years in square brackets are not really feasible in this style (you could try using OSCOLA instead) - the only way to do it is to leave the 'Year Decided' field empty, include the year in square brackets in the 'Reporter Volume' field instead, then for the in-text citation, click 'Edit & Manage Citation(s)' and choose 'Formatting: Show Only In Bibliography', then just type the citation out manually in the format you require (case name italics, year in square brackets). Goverment publications: Ignore the 'Department' field. Include country and committee/department (separated by a dot and space) in the 'Author' field (and remember the comma at the end since it's an institution author), e.g. "Great Britain. Ministry of Justice," or "Canada. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade,". For UK printed publications, 'Place Published' and 'Publisher' will usually be "London" and "The Stationery Office" respectively. Figures/Charts/Tables/Logos/Graphs etc: When using the 'Figure' or 'Chart or Table' reference types, use the 'Description' field only for page number, and use the 'Type of Image' for the type of image (e.g. "graph", "logo"). Also, if the item comes from an online source then put the type of image in square brackets (e.g. "[graph]", "[logo]"). Computer programs: Put the distributor, address, order number in the 'Publisher' field - or just include the URL and Access Date if downloaded from the internet. Dictionaries/Encyclopedias: If referencing a dictionary (or simiar reference text) simply, without authors, then use 'Dictionary' reference type. If referencing a particular section within such a text that has a specific author (and possibly an editor for the whole text), then use 'Encyclopedia' reference type. Electronic Book: In the 'Publisher' field, only include the e-book collection or download website. In the 'Type of Medium' field you must put either "Online" or "e-book reader" Equations and Datasets: Don't use the 'Equation' or 'Dataset reference types, just cite the source of the equation and use that reference type (e.g. journal article, book, web page etc). AV Material - Films: Only use 'Film or Broadcast' reference type for films with a cited director. In the 'Medium' field include: "Film" or "DVD" or "Blu-ray" or "Video cassette". AV Material - Other RecordingsBroadcasts: For other recordings, e.g. audio recordings use 'Artwork' and in the 'Type of Work' field include "CD" or "Audio Cassette" or "Download". For simple TV/Radio broadcasts (or recordings), use the 'Artwork' reference type, include title, year, the name of the channel (in the 'Publisher' field) and date of transmission (in the 'Date' field, e.g. "23 June"). If accessed online, include URL and access date. Generally ignore 'Artist' field. For TV/Radio broadcasts (or recordings) with specific episodes, use 'Audiovisual Material' reference type. Include the episode title (in 'Title'), 'Series Title', include series and episode details (e.g. "Series 2, episode 5") in 'Volume'. If a live (or online) broadcast, include 'Publisher' as channel and 'Date'. If a DVD etc, include that in 'Type' field (e.g. "DVD") and use 'Place of Publication' and 'Publisher'. The 'Credits' field can be used if required for credits or original broadcast dates - include info in full exactly as required, e.g. "Directed by David Maloney. Written by Terry Nation. First broadcast 1975". Generally ignore 'Author' field. For scores use 'Music' reference type, use 'Edition' field for notes (e.g. "Edited from composer's notes by Frank Smith"). Patents: Include patent number in EITHER 'Patent Version Number' or 'International Patent Number' field e.g. "Patent no. GB2439278", and include 'Issuing Organization' (e.g. UK Intellectual Property Office). Personal Communications: In the 'Title' field include the medium and the receiver of the communication (which may be you), e.g. "Conversation with John Smith" (whereas the 'Author' is the sender/speaker/author/creator of the information). Also include 'Date', e.g. "23 February". Newspaper articles: Where no author is given, instead of putting the newspaper name in the 'Newspaper' field, put it in the 'Reporter' field in italics (one of the very few instances where you should use any formatting or punctuation in the field entries themselves). For regional papers include the 'Edition' (e.g. "Newcastle") to distinguish it from other publications of the same name. Magazine articles: The 'Issue' field can be used more descriptively if required, e.g. "no. 26, spring". Alternatively a date can be used. Maps: Include map creator e.g. "Ordnance Survey" in 'Cartographer' field. For print maps, include 'Title', 'Scale' and 'Publication Place' and 'Publisher' (plus possibly 'Series Title'). For online maps instead include 'Area', 'Name of Database' plus 'URL' and 'Access Date'. Also, for all maps use 'Description' for the sheet number or tile number (e.g. "sheet 118" or "Tile sp93sw"), and also include the 'Scale'. Reference types not currently used: Aggregated Database, Online Multimedia, Online Database (for these, use Web Page) Classical Work (use 'Book' or 'Ancient Text') Equation, Dataset (for these, cite the source of information), Pamphlet (use 'Book'), Serial (use 'Book' or 'Journal Article'), and Grant and Hearing (there are no definitive specifications for these in this style). ***** This style is based on guidance found in: Pears, R. & Shields, G.
